In our time, we own more and more — yet true quiet grows harder and harder to find. Information pours in without pause. Our phones flicker endlessly. Life fills up with work, with people, with an unending list of things to do. We are always chasing time, and rarely stop to ask ourselves: what is it that can truly bring us peace?VivaTinta was born from exactly this question. We believe that art is more than an object to decorate a wall. True art should be able to change the character of a space — and to touch something within a person.

One Brush, Three Generations

In China, there is an art that has been passed down for more than two thousand years.
It does not depend on costly materials, nor does it chase after dazzling colour. A single brush, a stick of ink, a sheet of xuan paper — and that is enough to create an entire world.
For many people, calligraphy is a form of writing. For our family, it is a way of accompanying a life.
For more than thirty years, the artist Yuan Xiaojuan has devoted herself to this ancient art. From her girlhood to a creative life now spanning decades, the brush has never left her side.
Yet what is most precious is not the accumulation of skill alone. It is that, within this family, calligraphy became a bond that crosses the generations.
Her mother, now past seventy, took up the brush again after retiring — and between the scent of ink and the texture of paper, found new joy and new vitality. Her young daughter, immersed in it from her earliest years, has learned through her growing up to express her feelings and her imagination through ink and brush.
Three generations of women, at three different stages of life, drawn close to one another by the same love.
What they practise is not only calligraphy. It is a kind of focus, a kind of patience, and a capacity to be at ease with oneself.

Rediscovering the Meaning of Calligraphy, in Spain

Later, I came to live in Spain.
Like so many others, I was swept forward by modern life. Work, the internet, information, responsibility — the days passed faster and faster.
Until one day, a sheet of xuan paper was unrolled once more, and a drop of ink fell again into the inkstone.
In the moment the brush touched the paper, time seemed to slow. No notifications. No messages. Nothing that needed an immediate reply. There was only the ink, spreading slowly across the page.
And in that moment we suddenly understood: perhaps the most precious value of calligraphy lies not in what words are written, but in the way that, through the act of writing, a person can finally return to themselves.
In today's world, this experience feels more precious than ever before.

You Do Not Need to Read the Characters to Feel Their Beauty

In Spain, we often invite friends into our home.
Many of them stop in their tracks the first time they see a work of Chinese calligraphy. What is interesting is that most of them cannot read Chinese. They do not know what the work says.
And yet they can still feel the force within it.
Some say the lines are like dance. Some say the ink brings a sense of calm. Some say the work seems to hold strength and softness at the same time.
That was when we understood: true art needs no translation.
Just as music in an unfamiliar language can still move the heart, the rhythm, the empty space, the balance and the feeling within calligraphy can cross cultures and languages all the same.
What it expresses is not merely words. It is a feeling common to all human beings.

Why VivaTinta

VivaTinta means: to bring the ink to life.
We hope that these works, born upon xuan paper, will not simply be collected away in a drawer, nor remain only within the memory of a traditional culture.
They should become part of modern life. Present in European living rooms. Present in reading corners. Present in the spaces where people wake each morning and return home each evening.
And so we bring together original, hand-written Chinese calligraphy and the aesthetics of modern European living.
Every work comes from genuine handcraft. Not an image generated by artificial intelligence. Not a decorative print copied off an assembly line. But a true, original work, completed with brush, ink, and xuan paper.
Every stroke holds the breath, the rhythm, and the emotion of its creator in that very moment. Every work is one of a kind.
